TOUGH ON RUSSIA

Almost immediately after Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the 2016 election, we were treated to a barrage of left-wing conspiracy theories and excuses to explain how he pulled it off. Polling outfits were putting Hillary’s chances of victory at over 90 percent. Hillary’s defeat was soul-crushing for those who had spent the past few years assuming Hillary’s victory was a done deal, that the election was a waste of time when poll after poll showed her winning easily. There are compilation videos on YouTube showing liberal reactions to Hillary’s defeat. I highly recommend watching some—they never get old.

So, what happened? The left wasn’t short on absurd excuses. It was a white backlash, voter suppression, voter fraud, low voter turnout, media bias, evil white women, white nationalism, James Comey reopening the investigation into Hillary’s emails, bad polling, fake news bots, and so on, and so forth, ad nauseum. Everything short of alien mind control was on the table. The theory that gained the most traction was straight out of a James Bond plot: Trump colluded with his “good friend” Vladimir Putin to steal the election.

For most of Trump’s first two years in office, all we heard from the media was: “Russia! Russia! Russia!”

We now know that the rogue agents within the FBI who advanced this theory were desperate to stop Donald Trump from becoming president and crafted an insurance policy just in case they didn’t get their way on election day. A bogus dossier on Donald Trump compiled by a British spy was the key piece of “evidence” used to convince the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to wiretap the Trump campaign and ultimately convince the Justice Department to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate alleged Russian collusion despite a lack of real evidence. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has turned up nothing. Bob Woodward also looked into the allegations for his book on the Trump White House. Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt asked him, “Did you, Bob Woodward, hear anything in your research, in your interviews, that sounded like espionage or collusion?” To which, Woodward replied, “I did not, and of course, I looked for it, looked for it hard.”424

Despite the inability of the Mueller investigation to turn up any evidence of collusion, liberals and Never Trump conservatives, still unable to cope with the results of the 2016 election, have tried their best to claim Trump’s actions as president prove he’s a puppet of Putin. The narrative falls apart when you dig a little deeper—in fact, he’s been tougher on Russia than Barack Obama was. Liberals don’t want to admit this, but it’s true.

Byron York theorizes that “some Trump critics appear to think of Russia only in terms of countering online election interference,” but notes that Obama’s actions in the aftermath of the 2016 election hardly prove Obama was tough on Russia—especially when you compare them to everything Trump has done.425

Let’s not forget: it was the Obama administration that tried to reset relations with Russia. The Obama administration approved the sale of 20 percent of America’s uranium to Russia—over Republican objections.
